The Mathematics Understander
نویسنده
چکیده
The Mathematics Understander (MU) is a computer program which "understands" mathematics texts expressed in the language FEL (Formal Expression Language). MU can learn new definitions, check proofs providing explanations of the steps, and solve simple problems. MU is able, in principle, to learn any branch of pure mathematics from scratch, and has understood texts in Group Theory and Classical Analysis. MU works by using a contextual memory system (CMS) based on dynamic features and activation energy, which enables it to learn mathematics by the experience of checking proofs and solving problems.

Learning University Mathematics
This video demonstrates the program MU, the Mathematics Understander, which learns University level Pure Mathematics. The video is both concerned with MU's performance in learning and performing mathematics, and its underlying cognitive architecture, the Contextual Memory System, (CMS). The changes in knowledge representation during proof checking and problem solving are demonstrated graphically.
متن کاملSome Phenomena Handled by the Circsim-tutor Version 3 Input Understander
The CIRCSIM-Tutor version 3 input understander is the module which will process student answers during a tutoring dialogue. We have transcripts of human tutors conducting such dialogues, as well as logs of students using earlier versions of the computer tutor. This paper addresses how the input understander handles some of the language phenomena we have observed. Even when the student is giving...
متن کاملLearning Problem Solving Heuristics from Worked Examples
Much human learning of mathematics takes place from worked examples, yet this is a subject that has not received much study in Cognitive Science. A major problem is to ensure that a model can learn in a general way, and not be limited to a small subset of mathematics, such as Calculus. This paper describes a computational model of how students learn problem solving heuristics. The model is impl...
متن کاملEscaping from the Box
This paper presents a solution to the problem of the creation of new terms by suggesting that representations can come from the environment, and that through experience an agent discovers which representations are useful. If suitable feature building mechanisms are built into a system then it can build a large number of features of an object in the environment, many of which may be redundant. T...
متن کاملHuman and Machine Understanding of Mathematics
Mathematics provides a rich domain for discussion of deep questions about cognition in both humans and machines. Roger Penrose claims that it is impossible for a machine to understand mathematics, and therefore that a machine cannot be a mind. Research over several years into how university students learn and understand mathematics has led to a computational model of the task known as the Mathe...
